Your Questions Answered
Choosing from our collection of hand made tables and benches is a personal process, and questions are part of that journey. Here, we’ve answered some of the most common enquiries about the Sail Loft bench, covering materials, finishes, sizing and the making process to help you commission with confidence.
Wooden benches for dining room tables are practical, sociable, and space-efficient. They tuck neatly under the table when not in use, seat more people than the equivalent number of chairs, and bring a relaxed, informal feel to mealtimes. In solid hardwood, they’re also built to last in a way that most alternatives simply aren’t.
It was originally designed as the companion piece to our Sail Loft dining table, but it works beautifully alongside any of our tables. If you’re pairing it with a different piece, just let us know the dimensions and we’ll make sure everything sits and scales correctly.
We use locally sourced, solid West Country oak as standard, in chunky 1.5″ and 2″ sections. The timber is highly figured, with grain and tone variations that make each bench completely unique. English Ash is also available on request, and we’re happy to discuss other British hardwoods depending on availability.
Yes. Every Sail Loft Bench is made to order in our Devon workshop and can be built to any length or height you need. If you’re matching it to a specific table, or working with an unusual space, just get in touch and we’ll tailor it accordingly.
A hard-wearing clear oil is our standard finish, which protects the wood while letting the natural character of the grain come through. We also offer a full range of tinted oils. If you want something specific, get in touch and we’ll find the right finish for you.
Day-to-day, a wipe down is all it takes. For longer-term care, a light re-oil once or twice a year will keep it looking its best. We’ll recommend the right maintenance product when your bench is delivered.
As a guide, allow 8-12 weeks from order confirmation. Lead times vary with workshop demand, and we’ll give you a clear timeline when you order. We’ll keep you updated throughout.
Absolutely. Solid hardwood is one of the most hardwearing materials you can choose for everyday furniture. The Sail Loft Bench is built from chunky, structural-grade timber with robust joinery, designed to handle everything a busy household can throw at it. It’s the kind of piece that gets better with age.
